The release of Beyoncé’s Ivy Park x Adidas clothing line
prompted an online buying rush — and some amusement on the other
side of the Atlantic.
The colors of Queen Bey’s new line — maroon and orange —
are the same as the iconic jackets worn by employees at
Sainsbury’s, Britain’s third-largest supermarket chain.
The grocer wasted no time in making the connection. “Repping
since 1869,” the chain tweeted, referencing the store’s
founding, with a photo of a model-handsome young man in the
Sainsbury logo jacket.
Then the jokes came pouring in.
“Clean up in aisle 24,” quipped user Harvey, along with an
edited photo of Beyoncé in a Sainsbury’s store.
“Who run the tills? Beys,” tweeted Tom Warren, referencing
Beyoncé’s song “Run the World.”
But not everyone appreciated the humor. Fans of the singer came
after Sainsbury’s, many of them dutifully informed the chain they
didn’t own maroon and orange.
Sainsbury’s Twitter account took it all in stride, calling
naysayers “Karen” — slang shorthand for an irritating,
entitled woman — and starting the hashtag #SainsBey.
The similarity didn’t stop the success of the launch. Every
Ivy Park item on the Adidas website, even the socks, is completely
sold out. And no one seems concerned about looking like a

name-brand imitator: Two years ago, Puma released a $90 fleece
jacket that also looked remarkable like the grocery wear.
“No need to spend £70, work with us and get the original
burgundy fleece for free,” Sainsbury’s tweeted then.
